Keith Pretlow’s journey through education is a story of resilience, purpose, and transformation. Raised in North Philadelphia, he learned early that circumstances do not define destiny. As a young student, Keith faced academic struggles, at one point holding a 1.9 GPA, but even then there was a quiet determination within him. Education did not immediately come easy, but through perseverance, mentorship, and a growing sense of self-belief, he began to shift his trajectory. That shift would later become the foundation of his life’s work—proving that growth is always possible when opportunity meets effort.

Keith’s path into education was not traditional. Before stepping into school leadership, he built his foundation in culinary arts, earning an associate degree from The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College and later teaching culinary arts in the School District of Philadelphia. In the classroom, he discovered his passion was not just in teaching content, but in building relationships and unlocking potential in students who often felt overlooked. His ability to connect, mentor, and inspire led him to pursue leadership, earning his master’s degree in Educational Administration and eventually transitioning into school leadership roles.

As an assistant principal and now principal of Penn Wood Middle School in Darby, Pennsylvania, Keith has become known for his transformational leadership and unwavering commitment to students and staff. He has led significant school improvement efforts, increasing student achievement, improving attendance, and fostering a culture rooted in accountability and care. His leadership reflects his core belief that discipline drives instruction and that strong relationships are the foundation of meaningful learning. Whether leading professional development, supporting teachers, or connecting with families, Keith approaches his work with intentionality, empathy, and a clear vision for excellence.

Beyond the building, Keith’s influence extends into scholarship, ministry, and advocacy. As a doctoral candidate, he is researching the impact of certification in career and technical education on student outcomes, continuing his commitment to bridging education and real-world opportunity. He also serves as an associate pastor, bringing the same passion for growth and purpose into his faith community. Keith’s journey, from a struggling student to an educational leader, reflects his belief in what he calls “The Pretlow Effect and The Pretlow Affect”: the idea that education is not only about outcomes, but about the lasting impact we have on people. His story stands as a testament that with faith, focus, and the right support, transformation is always within reach.
